The Russell Women in Science Leadership Program

Mills College has a longstanding commitment to preparing women for leadership in science and has built a vigorous scientific community that fosters student learning, practical research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Although the number of American women pursuing careers in science has increased modestly over the last two decades, the National Science Foundation reports that only 28% of the workforce in science and engineering fields in 2015 was female. Through the generosity of internationally recognized science journalist and Mills alumna, Cristine Russell '71, Mills is proud to encourage even more women to pursue and advance in the sciences through the innovative Russell Women in Science Leadership Program.

You'll receive a stipend to support your work as you put your learning into practice throughout the year. Learn about some of the recent Mills research projects on environmental conservation or field research that have helped Mills science students excel.

Russell Women in Science Lecture Series

Lecture Series

Russell Scholars will also organize and manage a high-profile science event on campus—the Russell Women in Science Lecture Series. This annual event brings important female scientists from all disciplines to spend the day at Mills. You'll interact with and be mentored by these role models, and all Mills students and the public will learn about topical scientific issues. You'll gain direct experience in organizing a major public event and learn about critical innovations and the people who are driving change.

The Russell Women in Science Leadership Program is generously funded by Mills College alumna Cristine Russell '71.
